Migratory Birds
Migratory birds are present in large numbers on Kiawah Island during the winter months. Large groups of red knots can be seen actively feeding along the front beach, especially near the Beach Club, this time of year. On calm days, look out beyond the breakers for large rafts of waterfowl. The three most common ocean-going waterfowl species near Kiawah Island are lesser scaup, black scoters, and surf scoters. The scoters are solid black in color and easily distinguished from the light and dark colored scaup.
