Large groups of red knots can be seen actively feeding along the front beach, especially near the Beach Club, this time of year. On calm days, look out beyond the breakers for large rafts of waterfowl. The three most common ocean-going waterfowl species near Kiawah Island are lesser scaup, black scoters, and surf scoters. Male bobcats will cover lots of territory during January and February in search of a mate. This increased activity often makes bobcats much more visible to island inhabitants.
